(AP) – Nicotine salts are a new kind of nicotine replacement, but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has rejected a company’s claims that they will prevent lung cancer.
Nicotine salts are used as a nasal spray and can be found in the popular “Sunglasses of the South” brand.
They’re not approved for oral use by the FDA, but a number of other products contain them.
The FDA says they don’t cause cancer, but they can make people more sensitive to certain chemicals.
Sunglass of the North has been making air fresheners for about a decade.
It’s sold by a company called the Sunglasses of New Zealand.
Its parent company, Sunglass of New Zealander, is owned by the same person.SUNNYVALE, Calif.
(CBS Atlanta) – The company that owns Sunglasses New Zealand says its air freshening product is safe.
Suffolk County Fire Department spokesman Kevin Smith said the company has never had any reports of a problem with the product.
Smith says the FDNY is investigating the incident and will notify the FDA of any additional information.
The FDA did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the incident.
Smith says there are no reports of any cases of cancer from air freshing products in the past.
The product was available in a few stores across the country, including a Dunkin’ Donuts store in Massachusetts, but not online, and the FDA did get a call from the company.
It was only after a few more phone calls that they learned the company’s name, Smith said.
